Publishers We Love No 1

musselfeast_web_0As publishers, we spend a fair amount of time looking at what others do; and some of it is very impressive. So we thought we’d share a few of our favourite publishing firms over the next few weeks, starting with the excellent Peirene Press. Their speciality is new European literature – short novels or novellas – not yet translated into English. They are available individually but Peirene encourage you to subscribe, so you have a book arrive out of the blue every few months. They are beautifully-designed and produced but still affordable: they use quality paper and paperback bindings with flaps (strange how that one touch lifts a book). And it’s a delight to come across authors with such diverse backgrounds and interests, of which ‘The Mussel Feast’ is just one example: “A mother and her two teenage children sit at the dinner table. In the middle stands a large pot of cooked mussels. Why has the father not returned home? As the evening wears on, we glimpse the issues that are tearing this family apart.”

Finally, Peirene Press itself has a very distinctive personality. We won’t try and describe it: the blog is the best place to sample this.
